“Mortal Kombat X” E3 2014 eyes-on preview

“Mortal Kombat X” is bringing some gruesome and awesome new features to the newest installment in this long running fighting-game franchise.

In the demo shown at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, each character has three fighting styles available in the character select screen. They basically follow the archetypes of weapons specialist, ranged damage dealer and the last is summoning another clone/minion to aid in the fight.

The four characters we saw in the demo were Scorpion, Subzero, D’vorah and Ferra/Torr.

D’vorah is a humanoid wasp queen, while Torr is a small psychotic woman riding on the back of Ferra, a giant ogreish man.

The other characters visible on the character select screen but not discussed were Cassie Cage, who is the child of Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Kotal Kahn.

There were 24 character slots in the E3 2014 demo.

Once the fight began between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, we were treated to a quick exchange of words between the two fighters. Each fighter is said to have their own unique pre-battle conversation with every character on the 24-fighter roster.

Once the chit-chat was out of the way they proceeded to fight, and it was brutal. A new addition this time around is the ability to interact with the environment either to dodge, jump or attack your opponent similar to “Injustice: Gods Among Us.”

Returning from “Mortal Combat 9” are the X-ray moves. Having seeing it combined with the power of the current generation of consoles, I must say it is as beautiful as it is horrifying. You can see and feel the bones shattering and muscle fibers being ripped as the fighter endures the damage from such a devastating blow. One example is Sub-Zero who once again inserts his hand in an opponent’s stomach to freeze their spleen, turning it into an icicle to impale their eye.

Of course, the series trademark Fatalities make a return in even more gruesome ways. We had the chance to see two in action.

D’vorah vs. Kotal Kahn

Ferra/Torr starts of by having the smaller Torr jump over the victim and stab an opponent in the head, then slice them all the way down. Then, Ferra comes up and rips the victim in two pulling them apart like a wishbone and leaving the two halves separate
remains on the floor as we get to enjoy seeing what a brain split in half would look like as well as the rest of the human body.

The other was Scorpion’s fatality, which was absolutely cringe inducing. He starts by blasting a hole in the victim’s chest leaving nothing but a gap where there heart drops down into view. He then takes his sword and slices off the front part of the losing fighter’s face exposing a cleaved brain and wriggling tongue where the head use to be. These looked worse than anything in “MK9!”

Currently their is no release date set for “Mortal Kombat X,” but it has been confirmed that it is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
